Planned Giving

What is a Planned Gift?

A planned gift is a donation of an asset (or assets) that allow you to incorporate your charitable, family and financial goals. This type of gift can be made with cash, but many planned gifts are made by donating stock, real estate, artwork, retirement/IRAs, or business interests. Planned gifts can also provide valuable tax benefits and lifetime income for you and your loved ones.

One of the easiest and most frequently-made planned gifts are bequests made through your will, naming Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind as a beneficiary. Other popular planned gifts include charitable trusts, charitable gift annuities and life insurance policies.

Why should I make a planned gift?

Many people want to make a charitable gift but need to do so in a way that helps meet their other personal, family, or financial needs. Planned gifts can allow you to:

  • Make a larger charitable contribution than you thought possible
  • Increase your current income
  • Plan for the financial needs of loved ones
  • Provide inheritances for your heirs at a reduced tax cost
  • Reduce your income tax and/or avoid capital gains tax
  • Diversify your investment portfolio
  • Receive income from your personal residence or farm
  • Plan for the transfer of your business
  • Leave a charitable legacy for future generations

How Does it Work?
You can bequest a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or property to the charity of your choice by simply adding a sentence to your will. This is a very quick and easy way to make a difference and leave a lasting legacy – all without spending money out of pocket today. And, tax incentives for this type of gift can help minimize estate taxes – leaving more to your loved ones.

With the help of an attorney, you can add a bequest to your will or trust. Sample language is below:

“I give, devise and bequeath to
Dallas
Lighthouse for the Blind, tax ID number 75-0968301,
4306 Capitol Avenue,
Dallas, TX 75204
[insert dollar amount, percentage of estate, or describe property]
to be used for its charitable
purposes.”
